ARF TAKES PART IN SOCIALIST INTERNATIONAL WOMEN BUREAU MEETING IN LISBON
YEREVAN (ARF Press)–An ARF Bureau delegation–comprised of Bureau representative Hrant Margarian and Bureau member Albert Ajemian–was received by Armenian President Robert Kocharian on Wednesday–June 27. The peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict and the ongoing negotiations–as well as regional and internal political issues were discussed during the hour and a half meeting.
The ARF Bureau delegation later visited His Holiness Karekin II–Catholicos of All Armenia’s. The recent pontifical tour of the Catholicos to North America and issues of concern to the Armenian Apostolic Church were among the issues that were touched upon during the meeting.
In related news–ARF member from Armenia–Shaghig Maroukhian–represented the ARF at the Socialist International Women Bureau meeting held in Lisbon–Portugal on June 26-27. The meeting’s topic was equal rights for women in the workplace and in their personal lives.
Reports were presented by representatives from Portugal–Cameroon and Mongolia. Three workshops were held to examine the issue–which was followed by the adoption of a resolution.
In her address–Maroukhian spoke of the current situation in Armenia and the hardships faced by the country’s women. The ARF representative stressed the need to avoid applying the same standard or criterion in approaching women’s issues in different countries–since each country possesses different circumstances.
Maroukhian also presented the ARF as a party that has always defended the rights of women–a principle the ARF has upheld since the early part of the previous century.
