YEREVAN (Combined Sources)Hundreds of supporters and prospective voters Monday converged on Charles Aznavour square where the Armenian Revolutionary Federation kicked off its election campaign under the slogan of Our Old Friend is the ARF. The ARF pledged to strengthen the rule of law and pay greater attention to socioeconomic problems facing Armenia’s if they do well in the vote. Many buildings in the city center were already plastered with placards carrying the partys campaign slogan Yerkir-Media television began airing video of the partys campaign song on Sunday evening. Chairman of the ARF Supreme Council of Armenia Armen Rustamian, who is also the chairman of the parliamentary committee of foreign affairs, remarked that the May 12 elections were unprecedented and the ARF wanted to guarantee the peoples security and safety, which he said was lacking now. ARF Bureau member and deputy parliament speaker Vahan Hovanessian welcomed a new era for Armenia, which he said would begin after May 12. The leader of the ARFs parliamentary bloc Hrayr Karapetian warned that there were those who wanted to become members of parliament at all cost, in order to ensure that the laws benefited their personal and business interests. He explained that in such a climate, it was difficult to address social issues, adding that the election should become a time for change for the Armenian people. In his remarks, ARF Bureau chairman Hrant Markarian said that the party expected a meticulous campaign for victory for all. He assured the gathered that the ARF would not bribe voters, as some candidates and parties were allegedly doing. Following the official portion of the campaign kick off, a crowd was entertained with a concert.
