YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The "Nigol Aghbalian" Student Union of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation began a march of protest from the buildings of the Yerevan State University and the Engineering University toward the building of the United States Embassy in Armenia–Thursday at 1 p.m. The procession protested the removal of the Armenian Genocide Resolution from the US Congress agenda.
The participants in the demonstration were carrying transparencies "Turkish Threat at the Security Council of America," and "American Democracy Succumbs to Turkish Threats," distributing leaflets urging all to join the march of protest.
On behalf of the Armenian youths–the march participants wrote a letter addressed to US House of Representatives Speaker Dennis Hastert in which they said that the Armenia’s had been deeply disappointed to learn the news about the suspension of the process of the adoption of the Genocide Resolution. "This fact is testimony that the authorities of the country that declared herself to be the advocate of democracy and human rights–yielding to momentary interests–are carrying out a policy of double standards," the letter claims. On behalf of the Armenian youth–the authors of the letter express confidence that "sooner or later the US Congress–pursuant to the will of its people–will be able to place itself above its momentary interests and reckoning–and will recognize and condemn the first genocide against humankind in the name of justice and future generations."
The letter was handed to US Ambassador Michael Lemmon–who promised to forward it personally to the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
The speakers at the rally said that the only issue Armenia’s could discuss with Turks was that of compensation for the genocide.
