YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Armenian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tigran Balayan told a press conference Friday that his Government is following closely the recent developmen’s related to the arrest of 20 Georgian Armenian activists following an explosion near the home of an Armenian Policeman in Georgia’s predominantly Armenian province of Akhalkalak.
Balayan expressed hope that the situation will be resolved calmly and within the framework of law.
20 activists from the United Javakhk Democratic Alliance were arrested following the explosion. Criminal cases ere been opened against some of the activists, while others were sentenced to pay fines from $1,500 to 3,000. But no further details have been released as to why the United Javakhk members were been arrested.
According to Armen Aghayan, a representative from the Javakhk Council, the explosion was a provocation on the part of those in Georgia who cannot tolerate the activity of the United Javakhk Democratic Alliance.
During a press conference Tuesday, Aghayan said that the Javakhk Council is working to find more details about the incident, he said, adding that their primary task now is to help in the defense of the arrested activists
