YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenia’s Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian and Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Armenia Anatoly Dryukov signed the Protocol on the exchange of instrumen’s of ratification of the agreement between Armenia and Russia on the creation of a joint military contingent to ensure joint security.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Public Relations Department–the agreement was signed on September 27–2001–in Sochi.
Defense Minister Serge Sarkissian signed the document on behalf of Armenia on Monday in Moscow.
The defense ministries agreed to work together on the joint analysis of the military-political situation–come up with joint conclusions about actions to be taken when there are possible threats; agree on the creation of the leadership; plan on where to station the troops as well as their duties–in peacetime–and during a threatening situation.
The agreement was signed for a period of 5 years and will be automatically prolonged for another five years– unless either Russia or Armenia comes forth and decides to terminate the agreement in written form six months before the expiration of its term.
The agreement was ratified by the decision of Armenia’s National Assembly on February 20–2001 and by the law of the Council of the Federation of the Russian Federation on December 18–2001.
