YEREVAN–Some 700 Armenian athletes will converge on Yerevan next August to compete in the 8th Homenetmen World Games, an international multi-sport tournament held once every four years, the Homenetmen Armenian Athletic and Scouts Union announced this week.
Scheduled for August 1-8, the World Games are being held in Armenia for the first time in the history of the tournament, which began in 1981.
As the organization’s highest level of competition, the tournament will embody Homenetmen’s spiritual mantra of “Elevate yourself as you Elevate others,” as members from around the world come to Armenia to compete under the Homenetmen flag.
Having the games in Armenia will give Homenetmen athletes, coaches, organizers, friends, parents, and supporters the opportunity to embrace their fatherland, said a statement issued Wednesday by the Homenetmen Central Executive Committee.
“Homenetmen athletes will be able to embrace their cultural identity, by competing and interacting with one another on Armenian soil,” the statement said, adding that the organized games will allow athletes from the diaspora to experience Armenia.
The tournament will pit athletes against one another in Basketball, Soccer, Swimming, Chess, and Table Tennis.
