The Armenian-American community stands united in rejecting recent attempts by
Azerbaijan’s representatives in the United States to exploit the recent tensions in Armenia to misrepresent our community as anything less than fully committed and forever devoted to the independence, security, and growth of the Republic of Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh.
Recent statemen’s by Azerbaijan’s Consul General in Los Angeles, Elin Suleymanov, represent an unprofessional and cynical, but ultimately fruitless, effort to play divide-and-conquer politics among Armenia’s–both within the homeland and among the Diaspora. His commen’s intentionally misinterpret a diversity of opinions among Armenia’s regarding issues of governance within the motherland as a lack of resolve to vigorously assert our rights, defend our common interest, and protect our hard-fought freedom. Having lost, in the international court of public opinion on historical and legal grounds, and already having proven themselves incapable on the battlefield of imposing a military solution, Mr. Suleymanov and his government are now resorting to irresponsible and incendiary tactics that seem to serve no other purpose than to incite domestic support for their corrupt and increasingly unpopular regime in the run-up to this year’s Azerbaijani elections.
Sadly, the Azerbaijani government’s attempts to distract attention from its own failings are not limited to its diplomats abroad. Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, along with his senior aides and cabinet ministers, consistently sought to build support within his country by demonizing Armenia’s, touting his growing military arsenal, and warning of renewed Azerbaijani aggression against Nagorno Karabakh. In just the past several weeks, in the wake of the unrest following Armenia’s elections, he acted on these threats by launching attacks–the most deadly in more than a decade–against defensive positions in the Mardakert region of northeastern Nagorno-Karabakh. These attacks breached a standing ceasefire agreement that has held for more than 14 years.
In the past, we have stood together in defending ourselves against Azerbaijan’s war of aggression. Today, more determined than ever, we will continue to work together to further strengthen Nagorno-Karabakh’s statehood, and are ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in Armenia, Nagorno Karabakh, and worldwide in collectively responding to any threat against the Armenian people.
Against these latest provocative statemen’s, we urge our elected representatives in Congress to cut all military aid to the government of Azerbaijan until it’s leadership has ceased all threats, abandoned its stated intention to impose a military solution, and publicly affirmed its commitment to a peaceful resolution of its conflict with Nagorno Karabakh.
During these most challenging times facing the Armenian people, we, organizations of the Armenian community in Los Angeles–which reflect and represent a healthy and diverse range of opinions–reaffirm our united stance on the core national issues facing the Armenian people–justice for the Genocide, strengthening the Republic of Armenia, and defending Karabakh. We shall continue to cooperate in our enduring commitment to the prospering and peaceful future of our nation.
