YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Armenian boxers won a total of two bronze medals and one silver medal in the European Boxing Championship which were held in Minsk–Belarus. Vakhtang Darchinian and Artur Gevorgian placed third and their teammate Artyom Simonian placed second.
Armenian athletes also won two silver medals and one bronze medal in the juniors category o the World Weight-Lifting Championship held in Sofia–Bulgaria.
Rudik Petrossian (69 kg) from Gyumri was second best in the clean and jerk exercise and placed among the top three with the second best result in the snatch–clean and jerk combination. His brother–Rafik–was third in the snatch exercise–and fifth in the combination overall.
Another Armenian athlete–Yervand Kirakossian (56 kg) from Yerevan came in sixth place.
At a traditional 12-round 1,600 km cycle race recently held in Tabriz–Iran–out of the 72 participants representing 12 countries only 44 managed to cross the finish line.
Arsen Ghazarian of Armenia was in the lead up to the 7th day when his bicycle broke down. As a result–he finished only twelfth. His teammate–Dmitri Dyakov–finished eleventh. The team from Tabriz won first place–while Armenia came in the fourth position.
It should be noted that the Armenian athletes raced with 1970s bicycles which might have contributed to their non-medal performance.
