YEREVAN (A-Info)—A member of the ruling Republican party of Armenia Friday was denied entry into Georgia, where he was invited to take part in a conference addressing Armenia-Georgia relations.
Parliament member Shirak Torosyan, who was part of a delegation representing Armenia at a conference organized by the Fredrich Neuman Fund was not allowed entry into Georgia despite presenting his diplomatic passport. The other members of the delegation were permitted entry in Georgia.
According to reports, the delegation arrived at the Armenia-Georgia border, where Torosyan was refused entry and were made to wait for one hour until official Tbilisi confirmed that he was not allowed to enter Georgia.
“I think that this is a serious problem in Armenia-Georgia relations. Why shouldn’t an invited Armenian Deputy be allowed to enter Georgia? This is simply unacceptable and poses a serious problem. I don’t take this personally but see it as an affront to the Republic of Armenia. I think that the issue should be discussed during the Armenian-Georgian talks,” Torosyan said.
This incident comes days before Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili is scheduled to pay an official visit to Armenia.
