YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Sergey Kaifajian–a mountain climber from Ukraine–reached the top of Mount Ararat as a member of an international team and placed the national flags of Armenia and Ukraine on the summit.
During a news conference–Kaifajian said that the Israeli group tried to search for Noah’s Ark–but a strong wind hindered their attempts–making them postpone the search until next year.
Ukraine ambassador in Yerevan Alexander Bozhko–who was present at the news conference–said he was pleased that Kaifajian was representing his country. Kaifajian–who is Armenian by origin–lives in the Ukrainian town of Mariupol.
Kaifajian told the news conference that reaching the top of Mount Ararat was his dream. He said he had made many previous attempts to make this dream come true–but none had been successful.
"Each time I was refused permission to ascend the mountain on grounds that Ararat is a military zone and that the Turkish interior ministry could not guarantee my safety because of constant clashes with Kurdish guerrillas," he said.
However–last June he proposed to join an international expedition to Mount Ararat involving around 100 climbers from Russia–Macedonia–Scotland–Slovenia–Israel and Azerbaijan.
Kaifajian said the Turkish authorities intend to make such expeditions traditional.
