YEREVAN (Armenpress)-Armenia’s 2008 draft budget allocates 5.8 billion Drams ($17.5 million) for the foreign ministry, 95 million drams more than in 2007.
Part of the rise is to cover higher salaries of diplomats whose average salary next year will be 200,000 Drams (roughly $600), up from 161,000 now.
The ministry will also pay $2.6 million to different international organizations as Armenia’s membership fees. Also $13.4 million will be spent on maintenance of Armenian diplomatic missions abroad, while $600,000 is allocated for buying property for the ministry.
Deputy foreign minister Gegham Gharibjanian said Armenian owns 121 premises abroad. Armenia plans to open a consulate this year in Batumi, Georgia and Tavriz, Iran.
