OTTAWA-An Armenian Genocide resolution was introduced during the March 29 session of the Canadian Senate. The resolution calls on the Canadian government to recognize the Armenian Genocide–to condemn attempts at refuting the Genocide–and declare April 24 a Day of Remembrance for the 1.5 Million Armenia’s Victims of the 20th Century’s First Genocide. The bill was introduced by Senator Shirley Maheu who represents the city of Saint-Laurent in the Quebec province.
The resolution was backed by Sen. Raymond Setlakwe–who is of Armenian origin. Senators Lois Wilson–Consiglio DiNino–and Marcel Prud’homme expressed their desire to speak out on the issue. The March 29 session was close to its adjournment–therefore–Sen. DiNino proposed discussing the issue at the next session of the Canadian Senate.
