YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Justice Minister of Armenia David Harutunian–is back from Greece where he had had negotiations with the Hellenic Telecommunication Organization–the owner of Armentel and the sole provider of tele-communications services in Armenia. He said that a 15-year monopoly on telecommunication services in Armenia granted to Armentel may be abolished as a result of the ongoing negotiations between the government and its Greek owner.
Last August the Armenian government and the management of the state-controlled Hellenic Telecommunication Organization agreed to settle disputes between them through a court.
Opponents of the Armentel’s monopoly believe that its abolition would help the telecom sector’s development in Armenia.
The issue is most likely to be discussed during President Robert Kocharian’s upcoming official visit to Greece that is scheduled for next month.
