YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The lower court of the Malatia-Sebastia district chaired by Judge Iskuhi Vardanian sentenced former minister of education–former director of the Mkhitar Sebastatsi educational complex–Chairman of the Nor Ughi party Ashot Bleyan to.
Bleyan was charged with embezzlemen’s–aiding and abetting embezzlement–fraud–and official abuse. He was found guilty under point 2 of article 182–point 4 of article 90–and articles 184 and 187.
Along with Bleyan–accountant Aida Avakova and cashier of the educational complex Rima Poghossian were also found guilty under point 4 of article 90 of the Criminal Code. The court considered their deeds substantiated by the evidence obtained during the investigation.
With the application of article 37 of the Criminal Code of Armenia–the court ultimately sentenced Ashot Bleyan has been sentenced to seven years in prison with confiscation of 50 percent of personal property under part 4 of article 90. Bleyan will serve out his sentence in a correctional labor colony. The term of Bleyan’s imprisonment started on May 14–1999.
Rima Poghossian has been sentenced to six years in prison under part 4 of article 90–with confiscation of 25 percent of her property. She will serve out her sentence in a correctional labor colony with a general regime. Her term of imprisonment began on February 10–1999.
Aida Avakova has been sentenced to 2 years in prison without confiscation of personal property under part 4 of article 90–with the application of article 40. She is to serve out her sentence in a correctional labor colony with a general regime. Her term of imprisonment started February 11–1999.
The court ruled to raise 3,717,090 million drams from Bleyan in favor of the budget–and 24,779,785 drams from defendants Rima Poghossian and Aida Avakova on a parity basis–taking into account the payment of 500,000 drams by Rima Poghossian.
The sentence may be appealed at the Appeals Court on Criminal and Military Cases within 15 days.
