As the 20th century comes to a close–the crime of genocide against Armenia’s masterminded by the Ottoman Turkish government in 1915–still remains unrecognized by Turkey.
The Armenian Youth Federation of Western America Central Executive believes that in the final momen’s of the 20th century–the first genocide of the century must be unequivocally recognized and a pattern of lies and injustices against the Armenian nation must be reversed–in order to begin the new millenium with the proper historical perspective.
Today–with the coflict in Kosovo–which has escalted into a military confrontation in the former Yugoslavia–world leaders are freely terming the extermination of Kosovo Albanians by Serb forces as genocide. Yet–those same leaders–are hesitant in articulating their historical responsibility and recognize and call the events of 1915 as genocide. Such a recognition would have prevented similar atrocities–the Holocaust–the Cambodian–Rwandan and Bosnian genocides–which plagued our century in all corners of the world.
The double-standards must end and the crime of genocide against the Armenian people must be punished.
To commemorate the 84th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and to–once again–make our voices heard–the Armenian Youth Federation has organized numerous events and gatherings including a demonstration in front of the Turkish Consulate in Los Angeles on Friday April 23–at 9 a.m. A vigil/youth rally is also scheduled to be held on the same day at 8 p.m. at Ferrahian Armenian school’s Avedissian Hall. The AYF has also mounted a massive postcard campaign urging President Bill Clinton to recognize the Armenian Genocide.
This year–the Armenian Youth Federation expects that its efforts will bring about substantial results and a new outlook in regard to attaining the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Furthermore the AYF will not rest until the just rights of the Armenian people are granted and a United Armenia is forged.
The Armenian Youth Federation Central Executive urges all Armenian-Americans to come together–in a united front–to express our deman’s and fight for the just rights of the Armenian people.
We call upon all Southern California Armenian-Americans–from every religious–cultural and political organization–to take part in the aforementioned activities.
We particularly call upon the Armenian youth to come together–and work as one for the international recognition–retribution and reparations for the Armenian Genocide.
