YEREVAN (Armenpress)–Taking into consideration the media reports relating to the cancellation of the visit of PACE rapporteur Edward O’Hara as well as false explanations disseminated by the Azeri press, the National Assembly of Armenia considered it necessary to present the truth, said a statement released by the public relations department of the Armenian National Assembly.
The statement explained that it was the initiative of the Armenian delegation to PACE to conduct the visit, which was connected with the destruction of cross-stones in Nakhijevan, afterwards PACE commission accepted the suggestion of the Azerbaijani side about organization of a regional visit.
PACE rapporteur Edward O’Hara’s visit to the region for monitoring cultural heritage was to take place years ago but was cancelled for different reasons. The visit which was to kick off on August 29 from Azerbaijan was prepared for two months: a program of visit has been developed, Armenia and Karabakh expressed their unbiased support to the rapporteur for the implementation of the visit.
Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia sent the lists of those monumen’s which were to be studied in the three South Caucasian countries, Nagorno Karabakh and Nakhichevan. The rapporteurs already selected which monumen’s they would study and on August 29 the visit was to take place. According to the initial agreement, the programs of the visit to Armenia and Karabakh were to be sent on August 28 but instead a letter of the secretary of the commission was received in which it was written that the visit was annulled.
On August 28, the head of the Azeri delegation to PACE disseminated a statement according to which the rapporteur must visit Nagorno-Karabakh through Azeri territory while until that all the details had already been discussed. By forwarding conditions to the rapporteur on the last moment Azerbaijan made the visit fall apart.
The PACE Secretary General Mateo Sorinas sent a letter to the Armenian Parliament Speaker Tigran Torosian in which he informed that O’Hara’s visit was being cancelled. One of the reasons stated was problems connected with entering Nagorno-Karabakh. It was obvious that Azeris were hindering the visit of the rapporteur to the region, since their destruction of Armenian monumen’s in Nakhichevan would be revealed.
The fate of the visit will be decided at the next session of the PACE commission.
