YEREVAN (ArmRadio)–States supporting Azerbaijan’s one sided solution to the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict endanger the future of the negotiations process, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said Thursday during an interview with Mediamax.
The OSCE Minsk Group’s negotiation process is seriously hampered when one of the sides ignores certain international principles and presents only those that are favorable to them, according to Nalbandian.
The Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict settlement process is based on two guiding principles, which are outlined in the Helsinki Final act–respect for territorial integrity, and the right to self determination.
“Azerbaijan asserts that the principle of self-determination is possible only within the framework of its territorial integrity,” he explained. “No one should doubt that the solution of the Karabakh Conflict is only possible through the recognition of the right of the Artsakhi people for self-determination and its realization.”
“When countries yield to Azerbaijan’s propaganda, they not only fail to contribute to the negotiation process, but also endanger it,” Nalbandian said. “Whether it is done consciously or unconsciously, intentionally or unintentionally, it seriously hampers the negotiation process.”
Azeri officials that try to misrepresent the nature of the guiding principles behind the negotiation process resemble fake customers at auctions that try to artificially raise prices, but trade tricks do not work in diplomatic talks, Nalbandian noted.
“I would say diplomacy is like an iceberg, only the small part of which is visible,” he said. “The greater part of it is invisible and I don’t think it’s necessary to publicly react on every occasion.”
