BAKU (Combined Sources)–Various Azeri political factions have called on authorities to officially list US Minsk Group Co-chairman Matthew Bryza as “Persona Non-Grata” in Azerbaijan, after the US diplomat last week said the Karabakh conflict must be resolved through a referendum by Karabakh residents.
The Azeri Muasir Musavat party will hold a demonstration at the US Embassy in Baku Friday to protest Bryza’s statemen’s.
Nagorno-Karabakh residents will decide for themselves whether the republic will be under Azeri control or be independent, Bryza said last Friday after the meeting between the Armenian and Azeri foreign ministers in Moscow. Nagorno-Karabakh residents will make their decision at a referendum, he said.
"We urge the authorities to announce OSCE Minsk Group US Ch-chair Matthew Bryza persona non grata and to prevent his visit to Azerbaijan, because he questioned the territorial integrity of our country," said Hafiz Hajiyev, leader of Muasir Musavat.
The party has already sent a warning to the US Embassy in Baku. It also requested the city administration to authorize the picket, Day.az reported.
Leading Azeri political scientist Vafa Guluzade said Tuesday that a referendum would result in the complete loss of Karabakh.
“One should not pay attention to Bryza’s statemen’s. Sometimes the things he says make you doubt whether he has a higher education or he was just brought to the White House to say something,” said Guluzade.
“The OSCE Minsk Group wants the Azerbaijani leadership to accept the loss of territories and meet Armenia halfway. One of the concessions it offers is Azerbaijan’s agreement to a referendum in Nagorno Karabakh. Thus, the Minsk Group wants Azerbaijan to relinquish Karabakh,” he said.
It is important to have bilateral relations based on trust and a political will, said Bryza, warning against blocking the talks.
