YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The debates concerning the Armenian genocide in the US House of Representatives and its recent adoption by France’s Senate and the lower chamber of the Italian parliament are being widely commented by the Armenian community in Brazil–Armenian consul general in Brazil Ashot Yeghiazarian said.
In 1989 the legislator of Brazilian San-Paolo province announced April 24 as Genocide Day–a day of solidarity with the Armenia’s. According to the consul–Armenian news and developmen’s are widely covered by the local press. The chief consul said that proceeding the fact that Brazil is favorably disposed towards Armenia–the consulate is conducting work on getting the Armenian genocide recognized by the Brazilian parliament.
The Armenian community in Brazil is 40,000 strong. The Armenian consulate general–set up in November 4–1998–is in close contact with the local Armenia’s. According to Yeghiazarian–over the recent ten years only 60 Armenia’s from Brazil have visited Armenia. He said the figure is expected to grow significantly in the 2001 when Armenia and Armenia’s throughout the world will be celebrating the 1700th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity.
Armenia’s from Armenia proper do not choose Brazil as an emigration destination–perhaps because of its hard social-economic situation and some restrictions on country entry imposed by Brazilian authorities.
