BAKU (Armenpress)–According to Azeri news agencies–the issue of Karabagh was one of main discussion topics between Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliev and US President George Bush Thursday.
The same sources said that after being provided with a full review about the conflict and the current situation–George Bush instructed US Secretary of State Colin Powell to become engaged in the resolution of the conflict. The Azerbaijani president also told journalists that the US cochairman of the OSCE Minsk Group–Rudolf Perina told him that mediators would soon visit the region with fresh proposals.
Azerbaijani defense minister was quoted as saying–during a Thursday meeting with visiting Russian counterpart–that Azerbaijan would have to resort to force in order to liberate its occupied territories if Armenia refuses to cooperate. He also said the weapons deal signed with Russia Thursday in Baku reaffirms Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
Aliev also attended the Washington signing of an agreement on Article 97 of the International Criminal Court’s Rome Statute of the between Azerbaijan and the US. The document envisages general consent between the sides not to appeal to the international court over crimes committed by Azerbaijani and US citizens on the territories of the two countries.
