YEREVAN (Armenpress)–The number of deaths caused by cancer in Armenia displays an upward tendency. Experts say the rapid spread of cancer may be caused by poor social conditions and the absence of early detection.
According to data provided by the health ministry–the overall number of reported cancer cases was 20,602 by the end of 1997.
That year 4,709 new cancer cases were registered (2,507 men and 2202 women)–and in 1998 5,145 new cases were reported (2,705 male and 2440 female). The number of total reported cancer cases in 1999 was 21,605–including 203 children.
Lung cancer remains the most frequently reported–followed by breast cancer.
The number of reported cancer deaths in 1997 was 3000–according to health ministry statistics. It rose by 1,000 in 1998 making 4,000.
These are the registered cases–but there are also many cases that were not reported because many people cannot afford seeing doctors.
