GRADUATING CLASS LEAVES FOR ARMENIA
Four students–representing Chamlian Armenian School–won the first prize of the "Armenian History Timeline Quiz Bowl," organized by the Ararat Home of Los Angeles. The contest–which took place on Sunday–April 1–2001 at the Deukmejian Hall–brought together students–parents–and teachers from seven local Armenian Schools. The contest lasted about 90 minutes–with a short intermission. At the end of the contest–Chamlian was declared the first prize winner–followed by the Armenian Sisters Academy–and AGBU Manougian-Demirjian School.
The four students representing Chamlian are Armen Aivazi–Maral Der Sarkissian–Vatche Attarian and Nayiri Keosseian. They received a trophy and the school was awarded a check of $1200.
"The students worked very hard for several weeks–they deserve a lot of credit," principal Vazken Madenlian said. Their parents and teachers deserve a "bravo" too–he added.
On Thursday–March 29–2001–the 8th annual "I Love My Neighborhood" Poster Contest Awards Ceremony took place. The event–organized by The Committee For a Clean & Beautiful Glendale–took place at the Glendale Civic auditorium. Students from public and private schools participated. Chamlian School fifth grade student Sarah Kalemkerian–took the first prize for her work–and the school’s art teacher Anne Marie Chaglassian was awarded "the outstanding teacher" prize. Officials from the city of Glendale–as well as the school district were present. "We are extremely proud of the achievemen’s of our students and teacher," assistant to the principal Rita Kaprielian said.
On Thursday–April 5–2001–36 Chamlian students–accompanied by 16 parents–3 teachers and their principal boarded a British Airways plane at LAX–and departed for Armenia. After a few hours stop in London–the group was to leave for Yerevan–where they would spend nine days–visiting historic places and touristic attractions. The group was also to play a basketball game against a school team from Yerevan.
"We are extremely excited," a group of students had said. "This is our first trip to Armenia. We can’t wait to arrive there."
The group will return to Los Angeles on Saturday–April 14–2001.
