SANTIAGO, Chile–The Chilean Senate Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
The office of the Chilean Senate leadership reported that the legislative body would debate, Tuesday, for the first time in its history, a resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
The resolution noted that the Sub-Commission for the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities of the United Nations made clear in
1985 that the "Armenain Case" was a genocide. Likewise, they note that nations such as Uruguay, Argentina, Greece, Bulgaria, Russia, Italy, Lebanon, Sweden, Holland, Switzerland, Venezuela, Lithuania, Canada, the European Parliament, among others, had already recognized the Genocide and that Chile should add itself to that effort.
Chile “must weigh itself to permanently invoke the supremacy of Human Rights in international relations above any other agreement or compromise regardless of how important they may be. We constitute a political and moral imperative that Chile makes its resolution along the lines of the United Nations in 1985, in that a brutal genocide was committed in Armenia under the Ottoman Empire against a defenseless people that cry out for dignity and reparations" the resolution stated.
