MOSCOW (Itar-Tass)–Commonwealth of Independent States’ air forces and air-defense systems on Thursday began large-scale joint exercises for fending off air attacks using high-precision arms and stealth planes.
The press service chief of the Russian air force Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky told Itar-Tass that more than 50 different aircraft were used as an attacking force.
The exercise is a teamwork of control and duty forces of air defense systems.
The exercises involve the air power and air-defense system units of Russia–Belarus–Georgia–Armenia–Kazakhstan–Kirgizstan and Tajikistan–and are supervised by Russian air force commander Colonel-General Anatoly Kornukov.
The drill is conducted in the runup to the coalition exercises Battle Alliance ’99 to be held at Ashuluk training ground in Russia’s Astrakhan region.
In the current exercises–the Russia’s are training their air crews and air squadrons in destruction of ground and air targets that are in in-depth defense.
