May 4 Event to be headlined by Representative Adam Schiff
BURBANK—The ANCA Burbank will continue its tradition of honoring local leaders in government, business, grassroots activism and youth issues during its May 4th annual banquet, to be held at the Arbat Banquet Hall.
Burbank City Clerk Margarita Campos, local business owner Sarkis Nikogosian, ANCA Western Region Board Member Zareh Sinanian, Esq. and AYF leader Talar Kossakian will be given top honors for 2012, in recognition of their years of selfless service to the Burbank community in each of their categories.
“We are proud to come together on May 4th to spotlight Campos, Nikogosian, Sinanian and Kossakian for their dedication to a better Burbank through their tireless efforts in the civic, political and business arenas,” said ANCA Burbank Chairwoman Silva Kechichian. “Like the icons after which the respective ANCA Burbank awards have been named, each serve as an inspiration to the Armenian American community, and Burbank residents at large.”
Burbank’s own Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) will be joining the honorees as keynote speaker at the banquet, along with the ANCA’s Elizabeth Chouldjian, who will offer insights on the ANCA’s youth empowerment programs in Washington, DC. The evening will be capped off with the musical renditions of Koko Hayitian, who will be entertaining guests with his Armenian and international repertoire. Proceeds from the banquet will support the civic participation and youth development efforts of the ANCA Endowment Fund. Tickets can be purchased by visiting itsmyseat.com or by contacting email@example.com.
The 2012 ANCA Burbank honorees and their awards are detailed below:
ANCA Burbank “William Saroyan” Legislator of the Year Award – Margarita Campos
Margarita Campos has worked for the City of Burbank since 1974. After four years as a legal secretary in the City Attorney’s Office, she moved to the City Council Office where she served as Secretary to the Mayor for 17 years, then as Community Assistance Coordinator for 4 years. In 2001, Margarita was appointed to fill an unexpired term and was later elected twice by the citizens of Burbank to serve as City Clerk. Throughout her tenure, Campos has had an ‘open door’ policy with the local Armenian community and all Burbank residents. She has worked tirelessly to facilitate broader voter registration and participation, particularly among those who recently became U.S. citizens.
ANCA Burbank “Levon Shant” Businessman of the Year Award — Sarkis Nikogosian
Sarkis Nikogosian has been supporting Armenian community efforts in Southern California and projects in Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh since he moved to the United States in 1980. The owner and proprietor of the beautiful Arbat Banquet Hall, he is an active participant in Burbank’s busy business life. Over the past 10 years, he has made facilities available for countless community events, including this year’s ANCA Burbank annual banquet. His wife, Narine, is a businesswoman and author in her own right, with her book “Return to Beauty: Recipes and Old World Wisdom for Great Skin” touted by top celebrities and fashion magazines alike.
ANCA Burbank “Vahan Cardashian” Community Leader of the Year Award – Zareh J. Sinanyan
Zareh J. Sinanyan has been a part of the ANC family since 2000. He has served on the Burbank and Glendale ANCA boards for over a decade. In that period, Zareh has taken an active role in virtually every political race that has impacted areas heavily populated by Armenian-Americans. He served on the City of Glendale’s Parks, Recreation & Community Services Commission for 2 years, and has chaired and now serves on the Community Development Block Grants Advisory Committee for 3 years. Even while running a full time law practice, Zareh volunteers his time for numerous community legal clinics, hosted and is a regular commentator on various television shows, and lectures to various youth groups. Zareh is the father of four children.
ANCA Burbank “Karekin Njdeh” Youth Activist of the Year Award – Talar Kossakian
Talar Kossakian, a longtime member and current Secretary of the Burbank AYF “Varak” Chapter, is a second year health administration major at California State University, Northridge. She has worked closely with the AYF and ANC in reaching out to local Armenian youth groups, including the Burbank High School Armenian Club, which is presenting an Armenian Genocide awareness video during the April 24th Burbank City Council commemoration of the crime. The film will subsequently be broadcast on the City of Burbank Government Access Channel. Kossakian joined over 10 ANC Burbank activists last year in a journey to the nation’s capital for the ANCA’s Armenian Cause 2.0 grassroots conference.
