YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The Communist Party of Armenia has decided not to support either candidate vying for the office of president of Armenia–party representatives announced Thursday.
"The platforms of both candidates running for president in the run-off election does not reflect the interests of the majority of the working class," read a statement released by the CPU.
"In fact–these platforms continue the economic policy of the former administration which led the country to collapse. The Communist Party of Armenia has decided not to support either candidate in the run-off election."
The statement also noted that the current leadership’s promises that the election would be free and fair were not justified–as fraud–provocations and pressure took place during the vote.
Communist Party leader Sergey Badalian said at Thursday’s news conference that the position of the party was clearly outlined during the election campaign–and through numerous meetings with voters. Denying both candidates–the CPA leaves the right to free choice to its supporters–Badalian said–adding that the majority of his backers will vote against both candidates.
Badalian stressed that communists do not want a stand-off and are against boycotting the run-off election as it may destabilize the situation in the country. Badalian said the party will cooperate with a future president–particularly in the foreign policy sphere.
