In a piece published on the eurasianet.org blog, author Giorgi Lomsadze reports that leaders of the Crimean Tatars have sent an appeal for help to Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev to support the community as the crisis in Ukraine escalates and a referendum to secede from Ukraine is scheduled for this Sunday.
Lomsadze reports that four days after sending the appeal, which was also cc-ed to Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Aliyev has not responded.
“Crimean Tatar community leader Mustafa Dzhemilyev, a Ukrainian parliamentarian, gave it his best shot in a March 6 interview with the news site Haqqin. ‘Do not leave your Crimean brothers and sisters at this difficult time,’ Dzhemilyev implored Aliyev,” reported Lomsadze, adding “Recalling repressions by Tsarist and Soviet Russia, he underlined that the Tatars will never put up with a Russian takeover of the Crimean peninsula, and asked Aliyev to use his influence with Russian President Vladimir Putin to prevent such an event.”
Turkey thus far has been the most vocal supporter of the Tatars, with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu flying to Kiev soon after the Russian troop buildup to meet with Tatar National Assembly speaker Mustafa Abdulcemil Kirimoglu.
According to Al Monitor, Davutoglu told Kirimoglu: “If the term is appropriate, we are in ‘mobilization’ to defend the rights of our kin in Crimea by doing whatever is necessary.”

Axerbaijani Tatar-Turks have their own internal problems.
This is the funniest thing I’ve heard… This also proves that Azeri and Turks are related to and originated for such nomad tribes!
Armenia Bevere !

Aliyev and Davutoglu, please make my day, mobilize and defend the rights of your kin in Crimea, please Turkey do not do the same as you did in Syria, supported the opposition and than betrayed and abandoned them when they needed you most.
I hope even the hopelessly naive ones amongst you are slowly coming to the conclusion that without Russia the entire region in question would revert back into a Turkic Islamic cesspool and not even a million “dashnak fedayees” would not be able to stop it. The formula is simple: No Russia in the Caucasus, no Armenia in the Caucasus. God bless Mother Russia. God bless our Hayrenik. And may God help preserve the historic Russo-Armenian alliance from all enemies both foreign and domestic.
Agree !.

SOME Crimean Tatars’ opposition to Russia seems to be historically confused, not based on experiences in the modern Russian state which they hardly know, but primarily on the USSR and Tatar groups having historically fought against SOVIET government in 20’s and 40’s while Ukrainian nationalist forces were also doing so in nearby territories.
The only historical association with Ukraine per se was due to the USSR bureaucratic reorganization in ’50s under a Ukrainian premier, which happened AFTER Tatars were expelled to Central Asia… So considering that Stalin’s/ the USSR’s deportation of them was the major historical crime against them, it seems odd to be upholding exactly the bureaucratic accidents of the USSR, insisting on union with Ukraine. Never mind that Stalin was Georgian, not Russian, and that the same Ukrainian nationalists they seek to ally with were behind the independent Ukraine giving no official status to regional languages, as exists in many ethnic regions of Russia. If they want to go back further to Czarist Russia, which plenty of Russian subjects also disliked, then the Crimean Khanate’s own slave raiding against Russian and (mostly) Ukrainians would also be contextually valid, but ancient history from before the United States was an independent country is probably just not of primary importance these days.
Those people confuse a political conflict with USSR with ethnic conflict with Russia, building an identity around political alliances with former empires like the Ottomans and “allies” against the USSR. Plenty of non-Russian ethnicities exist and flourish in the modern Russia, it’s current and popular Defense Minister is Tuvan, and the related-yet-not-identical Tatars of Tatarstan and Bashkortistan enjoy possibly the best standard of living of any region of Russia, with autonomy and language rights. You just have to question people who want to pursue a conflict against ethnic/linguistic oppression which isn’t actually occurring, and who can’t even theoretically offer real independence, but only subjugation to another feuding empire (in essence). Pursuing ancient vendettas, even again opponents who no longer actually exist (such as USSR) just cannot be believed by anybody to offer a productive route forward for the world.
Well, I think, firstly it must be said: actually all Tatars are one nation. Only in the anti Tatar and anti Horde ideology they were divided into “different nations”: “Crimean”, “Volga”, “Siberian” and many “other” Tatars – so that to crush them separately.
All about this is explained in the book “Forgotten Heritage of Tatars” (by Galy Yenikeyev). It is about hidden real history of Tatars and their fraternal Turkic peoples. This e-book you can easily find on Smashwords company website: https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/MIG17
There are a lot of previously little-known historical facts, as well as 16 maps and illustrations in this book.
