DIYARBEKIR, Turkey–Diyarbekir Mayor Osman Baydemir said Monday that "If the Prime Minister and other government ministers want to openly declare war against Diyarbekir, I say ‘let’s see them do so.’ We won’t try to escape a fight. Diyarbekir is a castle, and it will not fall."
Speaking Wednesday in Ankara to his ruling AKP parliamentary group, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan asserted that Mayor Baydemir should "create jobs rather than making commen’s."
In the meantime, the State Prosecutor in Diyarbekir, which is itself a largely Kurdish city in the Southeast of Turkey, has reportedly not yet decided whether or not to open an investigation into Baydemir’s statemen’s. The commen’s that sparked the response from Ankara were made two days ago by Baydemir.
