LOS ANGELES–Elizabeth Dole–President of the American Red Cross–will be an Honored Guest at the Black Tie Gala Banquet celebrating the United Armenian Fund’s 100th humanitarian airlift to Armenia. This exciting event will be held at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles on Saturday evening–September 26.
Dole has had a distinguished public career having served five United States Presidents. She was named by the Gallup Poll as one of the world’s ten most admired women. Dole was Deputy Assistant to the President for Consumer Affairs during the Nixon Administration; in 1981 she joined President Reagan’s Cabinet as Secretary of Transportation–the first woman to hold that position; and was sworn in by resident Bush as Secretary of Labor in 1989. Dole took a one-year leave of absence from the Red Cross in 1996 to accompany her husband–Senator Bob Dole–on his presidential campaign.
The Banquet Organizing Committee is also proud to announce that industrialist-philanthropist Kirk Kerkorian will be an Honored Guest at this festive occasion. Kerkorian’s Lincy Foundation is one of the seven member organizations comprising the United Armenian Fund. Over the past nine years–the Lincy Foundation has donated to the UAF millions of dollars to charter the cargo planes for the airlifts and to fund various humanitarian projects in Armenia.
One of the highlights of the program will be the appearance of Jay Leno–the host of the Tonight Show on NBC-TV–who will entertain the guests with a monologue especially prepared for the occasion. Leno has been host of NBC’s Emmy Award-winning and No. 1 late-night talk show–"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," since 1992. He is noted for his signature topical monologue. He has won two Emmy Awards.
Serving as Master of Ceremonies for this unique celebration will be Alex Yemenidjian–President and Chief Operating Officer of MGM Grand–Inc.–and Chairman of the United Armenian Fund. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of MGM Grand–Inc.–the Lincy Foundation–and Metro Goldwyn Mayer film studios.
Also attending the banquet will be the President of Armenia Robert Kocharian–the First Lady Bella Kocharian–Catholicos of All Armenia’s His Holiness Karekin I and Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia His Holiness Aram I.
The United Armenian Fund was formed in November 1989 as a tax-exempt non-profit organization whose purpose is to bring short term humanitarian and longer term rehabilitation aid to Armenia. In the past nine years–to counter the devastating effects of the 1988 earthquake and the subsequent blockades of Armenia and Karabakh by Turkey and Azerbaijan–the UAF has sent over $235 million of humanitarian supplies to Armenia by air–land–and sea.
