YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–It will be of benefit to mediators and international organizations to work with the newly elected president of Armenia–Robert Kocharian–Democratic Party of Armenia Chairman Aram Sargssian told Noyan Tapan.
He refuted statemen’s characterizing Kocharian as an inappropriate figure to deal with the superpowers in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
"From the point of view of national interest–Kocharian is the best candidate today–because in order to resolve the problem of Karabakh–it is necessary to solve the problem of Armenia," Sargssian maintained. Kocharian is the "bearer of the ideal of Karabakh–one of the leaders of the national liberation struggle; he has good knowledge of the issue," the DPA leader said.
According to Sargssian–the DPA shares Kocharian’s view of the Karabakh settlement. Referring to the importance of national unity in the given issue–the DPA leader said there might be new options to the resolution of the conflict.
Sargssian also said that the DPA shares with Kocharian similar views on foreign policy. According to Sargssian–it is undesirable for Armenia to be oriented with the only the West or only Russia.
Claiming DPA’s support of the Iran-Armenia-Russia axis–Sargssian did not rule out cooperation with other countries.
Sargssian spoke about the alliance of Israel–Turkey and Azerbaijan–which is capable of growing into a political alliance. "The advancement of the Iran-Armenia-Russia axis will sober those who want to dominate the region. If Armenia is not given a due place and role in the region–it will have to try to obstruct all that runs counter to its interests. We will seek–if not domination–but equality with our neighbors."
