GLENDALE—The Board of Regents of Prelacy Armenian Schools Thursday announced the appointment of Dr. Alina Dorian as the new principal of Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School.
Dr. Dorian received her Bachelors of Science degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in Biology, with an emphasis in Botanical Sciences and her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, School of Hygiene and Public Health in International Health, Health Systems Management.
Dr. Alina Dorian has spent a good part of her professional career as an educator, as a director for numerous grants and as a project manager for full-scale systems restructuring and development. For the past eight year, Dr. Dorian has been a professor and the Assistant Director of the Center for Public Health and Disasters at the University of California Los Angeles. Dr. Dorian also serves as a lecturer for the Loma Linda University and is a trainer to the State and Local Public Health Departments and other governmental agencies.
Apart from her professional career Dr. Dorian has been an active member of our community. She has received her pre-school and elementary education at the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School and then continued her middle and high school education at Holy Martyrs Ferrahian Armenian School. As a youth, she was an active member of both the Armenian Youth Federation (AYF) as well as Homenetmen. In the past two years, Dr. Dorian has worked closely with Prelacy Armenian Schools in their emergency preparedness and response programs. Dr. Dorian has been working in Armenia and in particular, Karabakh, for the past 16 years. She authored Karabakh’s first National Health Plan in 1996 and was later conferred a medal from the Honorable Arkady Ghoukassian for her substantial contribution in the development of the social sector in Nagorno Karabakh.
“The Prelacy Armenian Schools and specifically Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School is a familiar environment for Dr. Alina Dorian. For many years, Dr. Dorian has been involved with our schools and an active member of the Armenian American community. We have great confidence in Dr. Dorian’s administrative and educational capabilities. Considering her educational background and extensive experience, we are confident that she will be able to further advance the educational growth of our students at Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School. Her knowledge and the dedication to the Armenian community, coupled with her extensive educational background makes her a unique candidate for the position. We strongly believe that with the cooperation and collaboration of the faculty, the School Board, and local and school committees, Dr. Dorian will succeed in continuing the advancement of Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian School” said Board of Regents chairman Mark Guedikian.

I have had the professional privilege of working with Dr. Dorian for the past 8 years. As an educator and community advocate, I have marveled at her varied skills and competencies. She has the unique ability to look at a problem and break it down to small size pieces that help those individuals involved able to take the steps necessary to take action. This is a true gain to this institution and community. I will miss her involvement in Public Health, but know that every action in her life has prepared her for this role.
As Henry Brooks Adams once stated, A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Your influence will live on . It’s time to lay the next path.. Good Luck Alina!
I congratulate Dr. Dorian’s new appointment. In light of her extensive and rich education and professional experience, I’m sure she will contribute greatly to the progress of our beloved school.
As a parent of a student and a community member who cares about this important institution / school, I sincerely hope that she will do her outmost to enforce long needed changes. I certainly hope, that she will no longer tolerate teaching stuff with questionable
Credentials, staff that “promotes” sectarian animosity in line with Berutsy/Hayastantsi/ Parskahay artificial, divisive and perceived differences, anyone in the staff that was/is lacking moral standards, and last but not least, a staff that got their position by personal connections.
I also hope that the students from now one will be acknowledged and rewarded only by their hard work and merit and not by the size of their family’s bank accounts.
Dear Editor,
I hope you will have the wisdom and bravery to print my prior comment without any alterations.
Often things get covered up and hushed in our community ala “business as usual” out of consideration not to offend anyone … and often this sort of mentality or order of things backfires with negative and destructive results, hindering all sorts of progress in the national life. People get discouraged, alienated and mistrust sets in the hearts and souls of good meaning community members. The results are clear, alienation from national and community life…
Let us speck about real problems and issues clearly and openly… Let there be light…
If a Turkish Daily “Hurryet” can be as brave to publish brave comments of Armenian readers challenging the revisionist, denyelist policies of the Turkish government, I think it’s more then time that an important and serious publication like Asbarez will have the strength to publish the opinion and concerns of community members who care about our nation and community. Thank you.
Reading about Dr. Alina Dorian and the educational background, the work and life experiences she has so far accomplished, there should be no doubt in one’s mind that Dr. Dorian is the right choice under whose leadership Rose and Alex Pilibos students will continue to taking bigger strides in their quest for knowledge and community involvement. Congratulations and good luck to all.
Congrats to the New Principal, I hope she keeps the open door policy at the school and does a wonderful job performance, sounds like she is very experienced. However it is a shame that all the uproar and dissappointment from the community, students, parents and faculty of the previous principal’s termination or shall I say non renewal of his contract was never once reported. Now I know all the Armenian news press are biggets!!! no difference then FOX news. they write only what they want us to know.
Dr. Dorian, although I have never heard of you –in spite of being an avid reader/follower of the Armenian media, and in spite of having years of involvement in both AYF and later in ARS, however, I wish you the best in your new duties. I just hope that your tenure lasts longer than our pervious pricipal’s, (roughly 2 years?). It just amazes me how rosy our media presented the previous principal’s achievements and abilities, and unfortunately –for reasons unknown to our school community– he was dropped like a hot potato. And now it is like “what was his name?”
We feel very close to Alina because we knew her many years ago when she was affiliated with the American Univesity of Armenia and was lpanning the Karabagh health care system.A very talented and articulate woman. We loved her very much and were very happy to attend her wedding in Stepanagerd. We wish her the best in her position as principal. We believe she will enhance and advance the school education program. We wish you a lot of success Alina.
Great selection.
Dr. Dorian’s resume sounds like a wonderful fit for hospital administration or a city health official. I can’t tell if she’s qualified to run a K-12 school. What is her formal plan for the school? Does she know how to provide leadership for a teaching staff? Will she stand strong in her ideals when faced with parents who don’t know how to back down? I imagine she’ll have a tough road ahead of her. Nonetheless, I wish her luck and success!
hi please i want to know any news of Daron Malakian, because he studied at the school. thank you!
