ECHMIADZIN (Armenpress)–The Supreme Spiritual Council of the Armenian Apostolic Church urged Armenia’s Friday to display a high sense of patriotism and place the country’s interests and its image above all when going to the polls on February 19 to elect their next president.
The Supreme Spiritual Council of the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin, which is chaired by His Holiness Catholicos Karekin II, met Thursday to discuss the current political atmosphere in Armenia. The top Clergy of the Church Friday disseminated a statement by the Supreme Spiritual Council that warned against growing antagonism in the run-up to elections.
No reflection of antagonism must overshadow the elections and nothing must split the unity of Armenia’s, the statement read. The statement calls for patriotism during the vote and notes that patriotism is measured by the amount of respect, toleration, and love citizens show to their compatriots during the election.
"The February 19 presidential election will be a very important event for our country and our people. Seventeen years ago our people chose to live in a free and independent state. The restoration of Armenian statehood set the beginning of new processes aimed at building a just state with social solidarity," the statement reads. "Our people are expecting the election to become the guarantee of stability, solidarity and progress."
