AMSTERDAM (Reuters)-A photograph of a grief-stricken Iranian boy clutching his dead father’s crumpled trousers as soldiers and villagers dig graves for earthquake victims won the 46th World Press Photo Award on Friday. The black and white photo was taken by Los Angeles-based Armenian photographer Eric Grigorian for Polaris Images on June 23–2002 after the earthquake struck northwest Iran–killing more than 500 people in 12 villages. In the winning photo–the small boy crouches alone at his father’s grave while all about him men gesticulate and shovel the arid soil to bury the corpses.
