YEREVAN (ArmRadio)—The European Union is ready to help in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution process, said the newly appointed European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus Tuesday during a visit to Armenia.
Ambassador Philip Lefort emphasized that while the negotiations on the Karabakh conflict resolution are conducted within the framework of the Minsk Group, the EU has the mechanisms to provide additional assistance in that realm. “The European Union, which is an important role-player in the world, is ready to help the region reach peace,” he said.
“The South Caucasus plays a role of a bridge and has a great potential of cultural and economic development, especially is peace is finally established in the region,” said Lefort who is also the EU ambassador to the crisis in Georgia, at a joint press conference with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.
”The EU possesses corresponding mechanisms and experience to contribute to such processes and wants to help Armenia and Azerbaijan equally, since it considers that both countries are equal victims of the conflict. This is the approach I’m starting my mission with,” he stated.
At the press conference, Nalbandian spoke about Azerbaijan’s expressed desire to become a member of the UN Security Council.
“I doubt that a country, which boasts of having increased the military budget 20 times during six years, can join the structure, which has assumed the main peacemaking and peacekeeping role,” said Nalbandian.
The foreign minister held a meeting with Lefort prior to the press conference. The two discussed issues related to the European Neighborhood Policy and the Eastern Partnership Program, noting that great progress has been made in recent times.
“Armenia-EU relations have always been one of the priority directions of Armenia’s foreign policy, and special attention has been paid to all aspects of Armenia-EU cooperation,” said Nalbandian.
Lefort also met with President Serzh Sarkisian, who expressed hope that the new ambassador’s rich diplomatic experience and knowledge of our region would be useful in strengthening the Armenia-EU relations.

Ha, the EU is in disarray and broke and it wants to help Karabagh? What a joke the EU is.
Wait until Turkey joins the EU and sends millions of Turks to the EU – the coup d’grat!
EU should stay where it belongs. All they are interested of is oil. There is nothing to assist for. Karabagh is independent and should stay independent! Double faced Europeans should clean their own countries otherwise they will start learning the Koran soon…
EU, hands off Armenia It’s a Russian territory, hands off, en go hug a Turk …..
”The EU possesses corresponding mechanisms and experience to contribute to such (peace) processes and wants to help Armenia and Azerbaijan equally, since it considers that both countries are equal victims of the conflict. This is the approach I’m starting my mission with,” he stated.
How can both contries be equal victims? If this is EU’s “understanding” of the situation, then God knows what kind of “peace” are they going to suggest? When one country is as big as Azerbaijan and other country is as small as Armenia, isn’t it clear who is the victim?
The European Union has only two chances:
1. Ask Turkey to leave immediately North Cyprus;
2. Recognize Republic of Nagorno Karabakh as indipendent state (but for me it’s still a province of Armenia)
That’s it.
EU should better take care of its own issues. Many countries of EU are after oil and money and nothing else…
UK, Germany, many countries n east Europe and Baltic state have forgotten the important role of Karabakh movement about all in 1980s –
Why the HELL do we need ANY resolutions?!?! WE WON KARABAGH!!! SINCE WHEN DO THE WINNERS OF A CONFLICT NEED TO DISCUSS ANY CONCESSIONS?!?!? I will be FURIOUS if we even give up ONE INCH ONE SPECK of that holy land that so many of our brothers and sisters died for!! I dont care about Azerbaijan, let them attack us! I DARE them!! If they could, they would have by now! They only have MAX 15 years of oil left! They know they are going to be in trouble then when 94% of their GDP is oil based! And the EU is no longer the CHristian Europe of 100 years ago! All they want is OIL OIL OIL! If we let them in, they will cut Armenia up and force us to return karabagh or some of the regions!! NO!! WE WON!! WE ARE NOT GIVING ANTHING BACK!! THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THE MISNK GROUP SHOULD BE TO HELP BAKU COPE WITH THE LOSS OF THE LANDS THEY STOLE FROM US! THATS ALL!
