YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The UNDP Armenia Internet Project arranged a competition entitled "Sard ’99" for webmasters presenting their Internet pages. It was the first time such a competition was held in Armenia. A prize awarding ceremony was held at the Armenian Office of the UN on June 10. The winners were issued certificates of recognition and awarded monetary prizes and souvenirs.
Prizes were awarded in the following three categories: Content & Relevance to the Community–Art & Design–Technology & User-Friendliness. Additionally–the Armenian Freenet (freenet.am) and the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation instituted special awards.
The page submitted by the Noyan Tapan Information & Analysis Center (http://noyan-tapan.am–webmaster Hasmik Hakobyan) won the top prize in the first category. The top prize in the second category went to Armenian Highland (USA) (http://www.armenianhighland.com–webmaster Gevork Nazaryan)–and the third category top prize went to the Arminco company (http://www.arminci.com–webmaster Vahan Yerkanyan). The latter also received a special prize awarded by the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation: a sponsored participation at the Workshop and Conference INET 99 (San Jose–USA–12-25 June 1999). The Armenian Freenet (freenet. am) instituted prizes for 9 webmasters.
In a welcome address–UN Resident Coordinator Katica Cekalovic said that the main objective of the competition was to promote and encourage the development of information resources on the magnificent cultural heritage–pioneering technologies–and remarkable people of Armenia on the World Wide Web.
Chairman of the Board Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation and Jury member Garegin Choogaszian expressed his wish for the competition to become the most prestigious among all the competitions held in Armenia–which would enable Armenia’s presence in the world-wide information network. Another member of the Jury–Ministry of Industry and Trade official Victoria Ter-Nikoghossian praised the works presented for their high quality.
