YEREVAN—The 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York opened its doors to visitors on Wednesday. On that occasion, the Russian edition of Forbes magazine presented another eight memorial museums it deemed worth seeing.
These other eight memorials include the Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, the Water Disasters Museum in Crimea, the Chernobyl Museum in Kiev, the Gulag Museum in Moscow, the Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima, the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute in Yerevan, the Titanic Belfast Museum in Northern Ireland, and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg.
Forbes noted that the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute was opened in 1995, on the 80th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. Built on the slope of a hill, where the Dzidzernagapert Memorial Complex is situated, the two-storey building is almost completely underground, Forbes notes.
The exposition of the museum is mostly comprised of photos and texts documenting the mass killings and deportation of Armenians from their historic homeland in the Ottoman Empire in 1915.
The Museum-Institute is part of the Dzidzernagapert Memorial Complex opened in 1967. Set high on a hill, the complex occupies 4,500 square meters of territory and consists of three main buildings: the Memorial Wall, the Sanctuary of Eternity (Memorial Hall and Eternal Flame) and the Memorial Column, “The Reborn Armenia.”
Renovation work is currently under way, and the museum is expected to reopen in April 2015, on the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
Spasibo, Forbes Russia! 🙂
And we are still waiting in the Washington DC AG Museum to open…..as soon as the building owner and his fellow clown boards of trustees to settle their squabbling about “who owns the building”. Classic Armenianism at work. Esher!
This is not surprising, Russian media, cultural and educational institutions always properly and respectfully recognize and condemn the Armenian Genocide and the Turks who were responsible for it. Unlike the “free and democratic west”, Russia respects Armenia and does not spinelessly bow to Turkish demands which are detrimental to Armenia, even though Russia-Turkey and Russia-Azeri trade volumes are exponentially larger than Russia-Armenia trade.
It’s quite an absurd situation: the west attacks Russia and Armenia for an alleged “lack of free press”, yet Russian media and Russia-based subsidiaries openly acknowledge the truth of the Armenian Genocide and other vital issues. Meanwhile, every single major western media outlet either distorts the facts of the Armenian Genocide or denies it completely, as if a diktat was handed down from the top in Washington. America’s anti-Armenian policies can be attributed to the fact that the US government is available to the highest bidding interest group, while Russia’s government is led by qualified leaders motivated by natural interest.
Nice to know that you can’t and don’t differentiate between the state and the editors of a publication within that state. Just goes to show you are unequivocally and unilaterally biased for Russia, and your main interests here is to serve it above everyone else in every way, shape and form.
You should be granted honorary citizenship for your devoted service to Mother Russia!
Actually if I’m not wrong, wasn’t the government of the Russian Federations one of the first after the collapse of the Soviet Union to recognize the Armenian genocide without 1 cent of lobbying money or effort, whereas for 100 year in the west the Diaspora has spent tens of millions and wasted tremendous energies to get slapped in the face for the 100th time. What suckers for punishment we are. I say forget all money and lobbying efforts in west and pour all money and resources into building the nation instead. Pathetic how the American Armenian community being one of the richest in the world is the one to give least to the Armenia Fund each year while we pour millions into the pockets of our favorite American politicians here in the corrupt process called “lobbying” which has gotten us nowhere. And then we complain of how corrupt the Armenian government is. Sorry for the rant but this is infuriating to me.
