YEREVAN (Arka)—Former Yerevan mayor Yervand Zakharian was appointed Wednesday as Armenia’s new minister of energy and natural resources, Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamian’s press office reported.
A corresponding approval was signed by President Serzh Sarkisian, his press service reported.
Yervand Zakharian was the mayor of Yerevan from 2003 to 2009. Zakharian oversaw the opening of North Avenue in Yerevan and the naming of Yerevan and Los Angeles as sister cities. Before his tenure as mayor, he served as the head of the state revenue ministry for three years.
President Sarkisian also appointed two more ministers to the new cabinet of Prime Minister Abrahamian on Wednesday, his press service reports.
Hovhannes Manukian, Armenia’s ambassador to Georgia, was appointed as minister of justice while Aramayis Grigorian, the governor of Ararat province, was appointed as minister of environmental protection.
Hovhannes Manukian served as deputy justice minister from 1989 to 1999. He also worked as chairman of the Economic Court (1999 – 2005) and chairman of the Court of Cassation (2005-2008). In February 2011 he was appointed as ambassador to Georgia.
Aramayis Grigorian was appointed as governor in 2013, representing the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF). From 2008 to 2009 he was minister of agriculture in the coalition government representing ARF.
