YEREVAN (Arminfo–Armenpress)–The Armenian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe intends to introduce a resolution calling for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide at the next regular session of PACE–Head of the Armenian delegation to PACE Hovhannes Hovannessian told an Arminfo correspondent.
He said the Armenian delegation has already collected 120 signatures from PACE deputies–and the issue is most likely to be included in PACE agenda.
Hovannessian also commented on recent remarks by Israel’s ambassador to Armenia Rivka Cohen who said that the parallels cannot be drawn between the Jewish Holocaust and the Armenian Genocide.
Hovannessian said that the Israeli envoy’s statement has elicited concern within Armenian political circles.
"Such a high ranking diplomat has no right of making such a statement," said Hovannessian–pointing out that the Israeli ambassador should have studied Armenian history prior to her diplomatic tour in Armenia.
"No diplomat has the right to amend the history of the country he/she works in," added Hovannessian said.
In other PACE news–Hovannessian and fellow PACE representatives Ashot Galoyan–Armen Rustamian–Gagik Manukian will visit Nagorno Karabakh on February 12.
According to the government press office–the delegation will have meetings in Stepanakert with Speaker of Nagorno Karabakh Parliament Oleg Yesayan–Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian–Foreign Minister Naira Melkumian–Minister of Inner Affairs Armen Isagulov–Head of State Department of Justice Robert Hayrapetian–General Prosecutor of Nagorno Karabakh Mavr Ghukasian–and Prime-Minister Anushavan Danielian. The delegation will also meet with President of Nagorno Karabakh Arkady Ghoukassian.
