YEREVAN (Snark)–Germany may recognize the Armenian Genocide said the German Ambassador to Armenia Carola Mueller-Holtkemper–maintaining that a decision is not likely to be adopted in the near future. She reported that the issue had been discussed at a meeting between Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian and members of Bundestag (German Parliament) in Bonn.
The Ambassador stressed that Bonn emphasizes the condemnation and prevention of such crimes against humanity.
"Changes in the Karabakh conflict settlement process are not expected soon," she observed. Mueller-Holtkemper explained that the fall 1998 presidential elections in Azerbaijan and the spring 1999 parliamentary elections in Armenia will hinder the conflict resolution process.
The Ambassador stressed that Germany is to continue its activity in the OSCE Minsk Group on Nagorno-Karabakh and said that Bonn is interested in the peaceful resolution of the conflict.
Regarding Armenian-German relations–Mueller-Holtkemper said the recent visit to Bonn of Armenian Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian and the return of German cultural valuables have served as impetus to cooperation between the two countries.
