YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–The European Parliament’s reporter on the South Caucasus Per Garton–who was on a one-day fact-finding visit to Stepanakert–met with Nagorno Nagorno-Karabakh Republic President Arkady Ghoukassian–national Assembly Chairman Oleg Yesayan and Prime Minister Anushavan Danielian.
During the meetings–Per Garton emphasized the importance of the Karabakh settlement for establishing stability in the region. Garton evinced interest in the structure and activities of the Karabakh National Assembly. He announced his plans to submit a report on the legislative authorities of the South Caucasus’s countries–including Nagorno Karabakh–to the European Parliament.
Ghoukassian’s Press Service quoted Per Garton as saying–"There are people thinking that one shouldn’t visit Karabakh because it is an unrecognized state. I do not agree with such an approach at all. On the contrary–one should look for possibilities of paying such visits and developing such contacts to get one’s own idea on how things stand in this area."
Per Garton announced that he had enough time to get all information he was interested in–and expressed his satisfaction with the results of his meetings in Stepanakert.
