YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–During talks with journalists on March 6–Nagorno Karabakh President Arkady Ghoukassian stated that the independence of Karabakh is the only peace guarantee–and there can be no alternative.
Emphasizing that any attempt of Azerbaijan to subdue Karabakh is a way to a war–Ghoukassian noted that the international community is interested in peace in the region–that’s why the position of Armenia and will Karabakh remain fixed.
President Ghoukassian mentioned that the idea of a "common state" was accepted by Armenia and Karabakh as basis in the negotiation process–however–now the only acceptable variant is the independent status of Karabakh.
The president expressed confidence that "the main obstacle on the way of settling the problem is the destructive position of Azerbaijan"–and the realization of the constructive policy by Azerbaijan will contribute to the prompt solution of the issue.
He said the involvement of Nagorno Karabakh in the negotiation process as a separate part will have a positive influence on the process. The participation of Karabakh–he accentuated–is a necessity: "The solution is not an end in itself–and the people of Karabakh should define its status by itself."
"The efforts of all these years have not been in vain–and Karabakh will maintain its independent status," Ghoukassian said.
