YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–"You should advocate the people’s interests–and for my part–as the president of Karabakh–I will do everything possible for you to be independent and unbiased–to prevent anybody from putting pressure on you"–President Arkady Ghoukassian said in addressing the Thursday conference of the Karabakh Prosecutor’s Office Board.
Ghoukassian highlighted the role of law-enforcement agencies in realizing the policies adopted by Karabakh authorities. The president regretted the fact that the public has lost confidence in the authorities because of the lawless conduct of some people in the past. He urged the prosecutors to do their best to regain people’s confidence.
Krabakh’s Prosecutor General Mavrik Ghoukassian introduced the board to the summary of the activities carried out by the Prosecutor’s Office in 1999. Ghoukassian also addressed some serious problems whose solutions require a relevant personnel policy and improved skills of the system’s employees.
In closing the meeting the Prosecutor General assured Ghoukassian that his office would support the reforms being carried out in the country.
Meanwhile–Foreign Minister of Nagorno-Krabakh Naira Melkumian received the head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation to Karabakh–Jan Sharer–Thursday.
The sides exchanged views on the reports recently spread by the Azeri mass media–including via the Internet–alleging maltreatment of Azeri POWs by Armenia’s during hostilities and the sale of the organs of killed Azeris.
The sides agreed that the propaganda of xenophobia is inadmissible–as it seriously hampers solutions to humanitarian problems and retards the establishment of confidence between the nations and achievement of peace in the region.
