STEPANAKERT (Noyan Tapan–Armenpress)–Nagorno-Karabakh Republic President Arkady Ghoukassian issued a decree Wednesday naming fallen Karabakh freedom fighter Ashot Ghoulian (Pegor) an "Artsakh Hero" posthumously. Ghoulian also was bestowed by the Golden Eagle medal.
What would have been Ghoulian’s 40th birthday on October 6–became an occasion for a solemn gathering at his grave. Ghoukassian–accompanied by prime minister Anoushavan Danielian–national assembly members and other governmental officials placed a wreath at his grave.
Ghoulian’s widow Nelly–members of the #1 Karabakh battalion and hundreds of Karabakh residents also gathered to pay homage to the fallen hero.
The Armenian Revolutionary Federation Artsakh Central Committee also placed a wreath.
The Karabakh Army marching band performed the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic national anthem and a parade of soldiers was staged at the cemetery.
Following the solemn ceremony–where Ghoukassian presented the honors and the medal to his widow–he walked around and talked with family members–saying that the families of fallen heroes were of utmost importance to the Karabakh government.
A commemoration vigil was held at the Ashot Goulian school–following which a government-sponsored memorial gathering was held at the Youth Auditorium in Stepanakert.
