GLENDALE0–The Glendale Ghapan Sister City Association has collected over 1700 gifts for pre-school children in Ghapan, Armenia for the third consecutive year, through its annual gift drive.
Pre-schools in Ghapan and 16 surrounding villages in Armenia will be receiving gifts in beginning of November. The cost for each child’s gift was a donation of $15 collected by the GGSCA. This donation is enough to purchase each child a backpack, school supplies, toys, small desks and education materials for the classroom, and basic kitchen supplies.
Through the efforts of various community-based organizations, schools and donors, this year’s gift drive has been the most successful. In 2005 the GGSCA collected 1,200 gifts, and in 2006, 1,500 were distributed to an additional nine villages surrounding Ghapan.
“We are thrilled at the number of gifts we have collected this year, and we couldn’t have done this without the efforts of the Glendale community and our various sponsors. We appreciate all of their help in making this gift drive so successful and the United Armenian Fund for the shipment of the gifts to Armenia,” stated Ani Cherchian, GGSCA board member. “We can’t wait to bring 1,700 smiles to these pre-school students who deserve so much more,” added Cherchian.
Some of the sponsors this year included The Glendale Rotary Noon Club, The Armenian Youth Association of California, The Armenian Relief Society of Glendale, St. Mary’s Armenian Apostolic Church, Daylight Adult Day HealthCare Center, The Armenian Society of Los Angeles, Tufenkian Pre-School, The Zakarian Family, Chamlian Armenian School PTA and the Glendale Community College Armenian Student Association.
“We are happy to have been a part of GGSCA gift drive in sponsoring 400 of the pres-school children in helping them receive much needed basic supplies to learn,” stated George Boghossian, President of the Glendale Rotary Noon Club.
Through the joint effort of the Armenian National Committee of Glendale, the City of Glendale, and the City of Ghapan, the Glendale Ghapan Sister City Association was established to help cultivate economic cooperation and cultural exchanges between the two cities. GGSCA is a non-profit organization that aims to foster goodwill and understanding through cultural, educational, economic cooperation between the people of Glendale and Ghapan. GGSCA has identified three areas of focus in Ghapan: schools, healthcare and community infrastructure.
