YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Festivities held on Wednesday were devoted to the 74th anniversary of the border troops of Gyumri. The celebration was attended by Major-General Yevgeny Potekhin–commander of the "Armenia" military group of the Russian border troops; Valery Atalian–chief of staff of border troops of the Armenian Interior and National Security Ministry; veterans; representatives of regional administration and mass media.
Being one of the oldest of Russian border troops–the 39th border troop formed in the most difficult years of the Civil War. The Second Tiflis division formed the kernel of the detachment. In 1997–the border guard registered 54 cases of violation at the border and 25 cases of trespassing from the territory of Turkey.
After a solemn parade–the participants placed wreaths to commemorate the victims of the 1988 earthquake. The same day–a 22 family apartment complex designed for border troop families was opened. Fifty families are yet to be housed.
