PASADENA–The 24th annual Navasartian Games opened Sunday at the Pasadena High School gymnasium–with the attendance of thousands of young athletes and supporters.
The opening ceremony opened with a procession by the Glendale Ararat chapter scouts who held high the flags of Armenia–Artsakh–USA–California and Homenetmen.
The regional marching band performed the Armenian and American national anthems in the highly decorated gymnasium.
The ceremony was highlighted by the "lighting of the torch" when a representative from the original Homenetmen Los Angeles chapter passed the flame from his torch to the 17 chapter representatives at either side of the gym.
Present at the event were representative from the Western Prelacy Reverend Nareg Pehlivanian–ARF Western Region Central Committee members Mardig Gaboudian and Avedis Ispenjian–Homenetmen Central Executive vice-chairman Jirair Sarkisian and Koko Balian–Hamazkayin Central Executive representative Sarkis Ovayan–ARS Central Executive representative Janet Derderian–and more.
Mistress of Ceremonies Eva Sahakian gave a brief history of Homenetmen’since the birth of the Navasartian Games in 1975. Stressing the ideology–"raise and be raised," she called for all to promote "sound mind and sound body" throughout the Navasartian Games.
