CANADA (Aztagdaily.com)– The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade of the House of Commons of Canadian Parliament passed a resolution on Wednesday calling on the House of Commons to recognize the Genocide of Armenia’s by Ottoman Turkey in the early 20th century. The proposed resolution–which initially met with opposition by several Canadian congressmen–was eventually passed by a margin of 9 to 8.
Commenting on the resolution’s passage–ARF Canada Central Committee representative Hagop Der Khatchadourian emphasized the immense efforts of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade throughout the past several years to pass the resolution; these efforts had always been opposed by the Canadian government.
He stressed that ARF-Canada and generally Canadian Armenia’s–focused on Canada’s House of Commons after Senate recognition of the Armenian genocide–and expressed hope that several pro-Armenian Canadian officials in the House of Commons would support the resolution.
