YEREVAN (Yerkir)–The Turkish policy of blackmailing other countries has proven to be very effective, even for strong countries such as France, whose national assembly is considering a bill that would criminalize the denial of the Genocide, said Armenia’s national assembly Vice Speaker and Armenian Revolutionary Federation Bureau member Vahan Hovanessian Tuesday in response to the Turkish reaction to the bill. Speaking to a Yerkir reporter, Hovanessian said that Turkey was seeking to carry out the same policies it used in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century: to emphasize to the international community that it (Turkey) is more important for Europe than Armenia’s were. "In a sense they are right since Turkey has a large economy, controls roads and is a large market, it controls roads and can leverage those elemen’s toward realizing its interests," added Hovanessian. "Some even say Turkey is a secular Muslim state and could be a model for changing fundamentalist Muslim regimes, but Turkey represents more of a threat to Europe than Armenia, Georgia, Croatia or Bulgaria would ever pose," said the ARF leader. He also said that if Turkey becomes a full-fledged player on the European scene, it will completely destroy the basis on which the European Union stands, and this is why some European countries, including the Netherlands and France, voted against a European constitution that would ease Turkey’s entry into the EU. Commenting on French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy’s conditions for Turkey, Hovanessian said they were symbolic. He said taking into account Sarkozy’s influence over the French society, it indicates that his opinion reflects that of the French society.
