YEREVAN (Noyan Tapan)–Recently–workers of the State Environmental Protection Inspectorate sighted hunting of moufflons (wild sheep)–an endangered species–on their way from Vayots Dzor to Siunik–the chief of the State Inspectorate Alfred Kzartmian–told Noyan Tapan. Upon recognizing the State Inspectorate officials–the hunter escaped in a car. The State Inspectorate has identified the man as a "very high-ranking official."
Kzartmian also reported that near Noraduz–at the basin of Lake Sevan–the workers of the State Inspectorate found 74 devices used for illegal fishing. The ban on fishing in Lake Sevan expires on September 1–while there is a permanent ban on fishing river trout. The state has launched criminal proceedings against six residents of Stepanavan from whom the State Inspectorate confiscated 121 river trout. The charged paid 240,000 drams in fines. Criminal proceedings were also instituted against two residents of Vayk–who were caught fishing river trout.
Chiefs of territorial services of the State Environmental Protection Inspectorate are expected to meet soon to discuss ways of enforcing the law against poaching.
