The Committee to Mark the 80th Anniversary of the Armenian Republic issued a statement Wednesday informing the community of scheduled celebratory events.
"Eighty years have passed since that fateful date in Armenian history–when the Armenian nation in its most dire situation–when the Genocide perpetrated by Ottoman Turkey continued to emaciate the Armenian nation–when hundreds of thousands of Armenia’s had become refugees and Diasporans–the remaining Armenian nation with its unwavering and interminable will power was able to achieve Resurrection–and after years of slavery establish an independent state," read the announcement.
The statement acknowledged as the initiators of brighter pages in Armenian history the May 28–1918 battles of Sardarabad–Pash Abaran and Gharakilise–the result of the ultimate sacrifice of the Armenian people.
"Dear Compatriots," the statement continued–"The free–independent and united Armenia achieved on May 28 is the voice and ideal of every Armenian heart." The main event marking the 80th anniversary of Armenia’s freedom will be held on Sunday–May 31–6 p.m. at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.
"Come–let us celebrate together the realization of our centuries old dream of a free and independent Armenia–and reaffirm our commitment to protect that freedom at any cost," the statement said in conclusion.
